Generalizing means to bring into general use.
In 1-1 tutoring, I love to help tutors and my students to find ways to make skills and strategies come into general use.
There are three ways we do this:
- Name the skills and strategies we teach. This helps students to recall them and to use them when completing the task.
- Post the skills and strategies in line of sight for the student to reference. And/or review the skills and strategies at the start of each lesson.
- Practice using the skills and strategies WITHIN the work they are doing.
