Integrated Executive Function (IEF) Model

Developed in 2020 by Mary Miele, this model is grounded in extensive research within the fields of executive functioning and educational methodologies. The IEF Model is designed to integrate executive functioning skills into the daily academic work that students already need to complete, rather than teaching these skills in isolation.

Six Teaching Routines:

01

Rapport Building:

Establish a trusting and positive relationship between the student and the adult (teacher or parent).

02

Assessment:

Identify the student’s current strengths and areas for improvement in executive functioning.

03

Instruction:

Directly teach executive functioning strategies tailored to the student’s needs.

04

Strategy Development:

Collaboratively develop specific strategies
to address skill deficits.

05

Documentation and Review:

Emphasize the use of strategies within the context of students’ actual academic work.

06

Communication:

Ensure clear and consistent communication between the student, teachers, and parents.

Key Components of the IEF Model

The IEF Model develops executive functioning skills through practical application and continuous feedback, helping students succeed academically and in life.
