  • increase emotional regulation
  • go to school with all items needed for the day
  • leave on time in the mornings for school
  • implement parent and teacher feedback instead of throwing it away

Challenges Addressed

girl on phone doing homework

“My child is often on her phone during homework time”

What we will do: Increase focused work time

How we will do it:

  • Focus requires visualizing what to do from start to finish
  • Focus is built like a muscle, in 2 min increments, so we’ll work in this way
  • Review & rehearsal are key to strengthen the strategy

“My student can only maintain focus during preferred activities such as playing on the iPad.”

What we will do: Increase focus during unpreferred activities

How we will do it:

  • The ADHD brain focuses well during preferred activities
  • We teach strategy in order to complete un-preferred activities which work WITH the brain using a menu format
  • Review and rehearsal are key to strengthen the strategy

flexible thinking with parents

“My child does not want to consider parent or teacher feedback. She only wants to do things her way.”

What we will do: Build flexible thinking

How we will do it:

  • Have empathy as the ADHD brain can be rigid in the way it thinks.
  • Name the rigidity as “the brain” instead of “the kid”- this allows for change
  • Learn and apply strategy to build shifting and flexibility
  • Review and rehearsal are key to strengthen the strategy

“My child is completely overwhelmed when doing homework and studying. She also has a hard time showing what she knows on tests.”

What we will do: Use strategy to get the most out of working memory

How we will do it:

  • The brain can hold a certain amount information in mind to use at the same time – this amount can be understood
  • Use a strategy to see information to use in tasks that require working memory
  • Review is key to remember the strategy
