Short answer: At Evolved Education Company, every essay is written by the student, in the student’s own voice. Our writing specialists may use AI to help generate ideas and suggest line edits, then teach that thinking to the student, who learns how to write about their own ideas and makes every change themselves.
Our approach
Every essay is your student’s own work. Our writing specialists may use AI as a teaching tool, to help generate ideas worth discussing and to suggest line-by-line edits. They then teach those ideas and edits to your student, who writes and revises the essay in their own words.
The goal is not a polished essay alone. It is a student who knows how to write about themselves, and an essay that is a lasting record of their own thinking.
Why it matters
Voice. The personal essay is the one place in an application where a college hears directly from your student. It is a chance for students to learn how to write about themselves, their thinking, and their perspectives, a skill most have not practiced before.
Consistency. In admissions, a student’s skills are seen in many places: grades, teacher recommendations, standardized testing, interviews, and sometimes writing done on site or under a time limit. The essay has to sound like the same student who shows up everywhere else in the file. When the writing is truly the student’s, the whole application fits together.
Integrity. Colleges and application platforms ask students to confirm that what they submit is their own work. Because your student makes every change in their own words, they can make that promise with confidence.
Growth. Learning to find a story, shape it, and revise it is hard work, and it lasts. Students carry these skills into their first college classes.
What our writing specialists do
In the Full College Counseling Package, each student works with a writing specialist for 25 one-hour sessions: 8 for the personal statement, from late February through April of junior year, and 17 for supplemental essays, starting in August before senior year. In each session, the writing specialist may:
- Ask questions that help your student find the experiences worth writing about.
- Help plan the shape of an essay before drafting begins.
- Read drafts and give clear, specific feedback.
- Check that each supplement answers its prompt.
- Keep the work on schedule, so no essay is written at the last minute.
How AI fits into our writing support
- Before a session, a writing specialist may use AI to brainstorm questions or possible directions, based on what your student has shared.
- When reviewing a draft, a writing specialist may use AI to spot line-level edits: a clearer word, a tighter sentence, a smoother transition.
- In the session, the writing specialist explains each idea and suggestion and why it works. Your student decides what to use and makes every change in their own words.
- In the final essay, the ideas, the words, and the voice are your student’s.
We protect student information whenever we use AI tools, and we use them for other behind-the-scenes work too, such as organizing information and researching schools.
How parents can help at home
Parents are a wonderful source of stories. You can help by:
- Sharing memories and moments your student may have forgotten.
- Asking questions about a draft, such as “What did you feel in that moment?”
- Reading for meaning rather than polish.
- Leaving the writing itself to your student, with the support of their writing specialist.
