Short answer: A college strategy document is the plan every later step builds on. At Evolved, it comes from the College Strategy Session, which takes about two to three weeks and answers three questions: what should your student study, what type of college fits them best, and how do they make their application stronger?
Who it is for
The College Strategy Session is where every college family at Evolved begins. It is designed for students in 9th grade, 10th grade, or the fall of 11th grade, when there is still time to act on what the plan shows.
How we build it
Weeks 1 and 2: getting to know your student. We start with three assessments:
- Career Lift Off, which shows your student’s interests and what a meaningful career path might look like, long before they have to declare a major.
- A personality assessment, which shows how your student prefers to work and what they value.
- MindPrint, a cognitive assessment of how your student thinks, learns, and processes information.
We also review two years of report cards, the high school profile, any evaluations, awards, and your student’s résumé, including course rigor and how your student is positioned in their school. Then we hold two separate conversations: one with your student about their interests and hopes, and one with you about your family’s goals and context.
Weeks 2 and 3: building the strategy. We explore what fit means for your student, including the size, setting, culture, and community where they will do their best, and any campus visits so far. Then we bring everything together into one document and walk through it with you in three strategy meetings.
What is inside the document
1. Student profile. What the career, personality, and cognitive assessments show, alongside your student’s grades and school context.
2. Personal and academic clarity. A plain-language read of what your student should study, and the kind of work and setting where they will do their best.
3. Best-fit college map. Based on where the application stands today, a realistic picture of the selective colleges your student is best positioned for, applied to up to four representative schools.
4. Six-part development plan. Concrete next steps for each part of the application file:
- Transcript
- Extracurriculars and experience
- Standardized testing
- Recommendations
- Writing
- Institutional priorities, meaning how your student connects to what each college values, including the factors colleges report in their Common Data Set and any recruiting opportunities
The plan names specific summer programs, courses, and projects worth pursuing.
What it is not
The strategy document is not a final college list. A full list, with a strategy for every school, is built later in the Full College Counseling Package. The document also does not decide who your student will become. It makes them an informed participant in their own college admissions build.
What comes next
Many families continue with Ongoing Development Consulting: four sessions a year in 9th grade, 10th grade, and the fall of 11th grade, each tied to the six-part plan. At the end of January of junior year, families can begin the Full College Counseling Package, which carries the work through applications and your student’s decision on May 1.
