Short answer: Choose an educational consultant the way you would choose a school: by criteria. Look for educational credentials, a clear method, named deliverables at each stage, experience with learners like your child, and honesty, including no promises of admission.
Families in New York have many people to turn to when a school decision is ahead. Asking careful questions before you choose is a sign of a thoughtful parent, and the right partner will welcome them. This checklist gives you the criteria we would use if we were in your seat.
1. An educational background
Admissions is one part of a child’s education, not the whole of it. Look for a team of educators: teachers, learning specialists, assessment experts, and counselors with degrees and certifications in education. Membership in professional associations is a good sign, too.
Ask: “Who on your team will work with my child, and what is their training?”
2. A clear method
A good consultant can explain, in plain words, how they get from your first conversation to a plan. They should be able to tell you how a school list is built and why each school is on it.
At Evolved, every school list is anchored in criteria: what your child needs, what your family values, and what each school looks for.
Ask: “How do you decide which schools go on a list?”
3. Deliverables you can hold
You should know what you will receive at the end of each stage: a written plan, a school list with a reason for each school, a timeline, and next steps. Progress should be something you can see.
Ask: “What will we have at the end of each stage?”
4. Experience with every kind of learner
Many children have a learning profile that matters for school fit, whether or not there is a diagnosis. Look for a team that understands evaluations, IEPs, and accommodations, and that starts from your child’s strengths.
Ask: “How do you support students who learn differently?”
5. Range across stages and paths
A family’s needs change over time. Your child may move from nursery school to elementary school, from a public school to a private one, or toward boarding school or college. A partner who knows each stage can help you see the whole path.
Ask: “Which stages and school types do you work with?”
6. Honesty and ethics
No one can guarantee admission to any school, and a trustworthy consultant will say so. Students should write their own essays. Your family’s information should stay confidential. Fees and scope should be clear and in writing before work begins.
Ask: “What can you promise, and what can’t you?”
7. Clear communication
Know who you will work with, how often you will meet, and how to reach the team between meetings.
Ask: “Who do I contact with a question, and how quickly will I hear back?”
8. Fit with your family
The right consultant listens first. You should leave the first conversation with more clarity than you had before it, and a sense that your child was understood.
Ask yourself: “Did I feel heard, and do I understand what would happen next?”
Questions to bring to a first conversation
- Who will work with my child, and what is their background?
- How do you get to know a child before recommending schools?
- How do you build a school list?
- What will we receive at each stage?
- How do you support students with learning differences?
- What is included in the scope, and what costs extra?
- How do you handle essays and other student writing?
- What happens if our plans change partway through?
