It is hard to believe that boarding school applications are already available! While it may feel early to start thinking about this process, the truth is that now is the perfect time to get started. Our Boarding School Specialist, Sarah Bergin, has put together some key things to consider as you begin, along with how she supports families every step of the way.
Start with a strong, balanced school list
An assessment-based, best-fit school criteria ensures that all the key ingredients for a “best-fit” school — for both your child and your family — are identified and prioritized. A balanced list is essential, so there is a range of schools that match your criteria and where your child will thrive.
What does developing a customized school criteria involve?
I work closely with families to understand how a student learns and lives best in a boarding school environment. Together, we explore your values, priorities, and needs beyond the classroom. This personalized approach helps identify schools that align with your family’s goals and your child’s strengths and interests.
How many schools should we apply to?
Most students apply to 6–8 schools, but this can vary depending on your goals and comfort level. I help families build a “just right” list that feels balanced and manageable.
What does the application include?
- Student Profile: Interests, activities, awards, biographical information, and an application fee.
- Writing Components: Personal essays and/or short responses.
- Recommendations & Supporting Materials: These are usually submitted later in the process.
Common questions families ask:
Do we need to complete the multimedia section of the profile?
→ This can usually be submitted later. It’s always okay to check with each school for specific guidance.
What if the school has additional submission portals?
→ Some schools encourage extra materials beyond the standard application. I always
recommend submitting anything that helps schools understand your student’s unique gifts
and potential contributions.
You don’t need to do this alone, support is available!
