Ever since COVID-19, tutors are engaging with students online for tutoring. There are advantages to working in this way:

  1. Students have access to tutors with expertise from any place.
  2. Tutors can maximize their work time and efficiently make a living.
  3. Students can work within the technology they are accustomed to within a variety of classes.
  4. Students can work using online platforms which they will use when taking standardized tests online.
  5. Students grow accustomed to working with and learning to communicate and employ the integration of apps as they work with tutors – which blends into their experience in higher education as well as the workplace.

The approaches and techniques which make online tutoring successful are as follows:

  1. Use a platform such as Zoom or Google Meet where you can interact as much as possible with your student. Zoom has a shared screen function (with the Pro account) where tutors and students can share screens, key board, and mouse functions. There is also a whiteboard to share on Zoom. We love sharing text and then using the Zoom annotation features to take notes with our students right onto the document.
  2. Employ a platform to house your lessons from week to week which you and your student can have access to. Our favorites are Seesaw.me, Padlet and Google Classroom. We love using these platforms to house strategies, processes, and skills we are working on with our students. The platform provides an easy to use avenue for students to rehearse and review material we cover in lessons.
  3. Source content from all over the Web. We love using Learning A-Z, ABCYA.com, Brain Pop, Typing.com, Smart Exchange, and Boom Learning
  4. Mix synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities. Meet in live time to connect, dialogue, collaborate and assess. Provide customized practice and guidance using platforms such as Seesaw.me, Padlet, and Google Classroom.
